AJ DEMARIS
AJ Demaris came up through the Sisters School District and was a three
sport star at Sisters High School, graduating from SHS in 1962. According
to Coach Roy Runco, AJ was the best athlete he ever coached. On the
football field, AJ was right halfback on the 1959 state championship team,
MVP of the 1961 state championship team, and was the starting quarterback
and defensive back in the 1961 Shrine All-Star game (one of only three who
played both sides). On the basketball court, AJ was team MVP in 1961 and
1962. On the track, AJ at one time held the school records in long jump,
shot put, pole vault, and low hurdles. He tied for the state championship in
the pole vault in 1961, went to the state championships in the long jump and
high jump, and finished second in both the Junior and Senior State Decathlon
Meets in 1960 and 1961. AJ later attended the University of Oregon and
enjoyed a stellar career as a wildlife biologist. AJ has long family ties with
Sisters, including his father Albert, a former mayor of Sisters, and his cousin
Gail Demaris, probable namesake for Demaris Lake.
