RON PHILLIPS
Ron Phillips is one of the most accomplished and well-rounded students to have
come out of Sisters High School. Ron excelled in the classroom, was Student Body
Vice President his junior year and Student Body President his senior year, and was
the recipient of a number of academic honors. Ron also was a four sport star, and
the first Outlaw to have received an amazing 16 varsity letters, excelling in each
sport. Standing at 6’3”, Ron played the end position (or wide receiver) and
competed in the 1957 East-West Shrine All-Star game (which included the best
players in the state). On the basketball court, Ron was a multiple All-District and
All-State performer, leading the team to the state championship tournament his
junior and senior years. In the spring, Ron really displayed his extraordinary
athleticism and love of sport. He held the school records in the 440, the javelin,
and long jump, and as a member of the 880 yard relay team (competing in each at
the state championships). He also played center field for the baseball team, also
helping the team the state championship game. Ron attended Linfield College,
where he continued to star in the classroom and on the basketball court (ending his
career as the third all-time rebound leader, attaining Pacific NW Conference 2
nd
team, and winning the distinguished District 2 NAIA-Merit Award). After college,
Ron continued to combine his love of academics and athletics, and taught and
coached in Madras for approximately 30 years.
