1996 SHS VOLLEYBALL TEAM
The 1996 Sisters High School Volleyball team set the standard for what has
become a regular force in Oregon high school volleyball – SHS Volleyball. Coach
Rod Jones took over a SHS volleyball squad that had developed and reached the
state quarterfinals from 1993 – 1995 under Coach Mary Flande. There were only
four state classifications in 1996, and SHS was one of the smallest schools in the 3A
class. The 1996 Volleyball team promptly went undefeated in league (its fifth
straight championship), then went undefeated in the state championships,
prevailing over Estacada in the state final, 12-15, 15-5, 15-8. This was the first ever
girls’ state championship for SHS, and the first state championship of any kind for
the renewed SHS (having re-commenced in 1992 after a 25 year absence). Many of
the players went on to play collegiately. Coaches: Rod Jones, Brad Bullock, Samra
Spear, Jill Misener. Players: Kallan Dailey, Kelly Davis, Heather Dempsey (All-
State), Sara Easter, Jennifer Elbers, Cortney Ellis, Suzanne Fouts (All-State), Amy
Garrison, Shelly Greene (All-State), Kylene Hayes, Katie Patterson, Amy
VanAcker.
