BILL EDWARDS
Administrator, Teacher, Leader, Coach, Friend, Mentor, WW II Veteran (Navy) –
all these and more describe Bill Edwards (12/30/24 – 10/6/05). Bill was the Principal
and Superintendent of Sisters High School from 1949 through 1956, and principal
of Bend High School from 1959 – 1961, and later had positions in Europe with the
military dependent school system. He always remained active with the Sisters
School District and its students and teachers until his passing in 2005. Bill is fondly
remembered as a father figure - not only a school leader, but a community leader
throughout Sisters. He was a key person in Sisters’ transition from a rough logging
and ranching town to its place as one of the premier towns in the Northwest. Bill
started the first conservation program in the area and inspired so many people,
including teachers, students and community members, to get involved. Bill always
pushed Sisters students, encouraging many of them to expand their horizons, to
continue their education, and to open their eyes to a broader world around them.
He was a lifelong conservationist and helped set up the Friends of the Metolius (a
non-profit conservation organization), while also setting up what now is known as
the Bill Edwards Alumni Association Sisters High School Spirit Scholarship. Bill
impacted thousands - his legacy has lasted long after his time serving the Sisters
School District and continues through today.
