SHELLY GREENE
Shelly Greene (SHS Class of 1998) – academics, athlete, service to community.
Shelley took to the courts and track with a passion for excellence that few can
achieve. On the track, Shelly was a multi-event athlete who went to the state
meet in the 200, long jump, and 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays. At one time, Shelly
held the school records in the 100, 200, long jump, and 4 x 100 relay. Shelly also
excelled on the basketball court, captaining the 1997-98 team. However, her
greatest athletic achievements were on the volleyball court. Shelly was named 1
st
team all-state and team captain during fall 1997, and was 3A Player of the Year for
the fall 1996 season for a team that won the state championship. She also was
named MVP of the Capital Conference twice. In 1998, Shelly was honored for her
accomplishments on and off the court by being named the winner of the Wendy’s
High School Heisman for Oregon, and was named one of 12 finalists for the
national award. The award recognized performance on the field or court, and in
academics, combined with a demonstration of positive involvement in the
community. Shelly’s activities included community service with the Starry Nights
concerts, blood drives, church activities, coaching grade school volleyball, and peer
counseling. Shelly continued her volleyball career as an outside hitter at the
NCAA D1 level at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she played
from 1998 – 2001, graduating in 2002. Shelly thereafter become a registered nurse,
continuing her legacy of service.
