SHS 1961 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
FOOTBALL TEAM
The Fall 1961 Sisters High School Football Team went undefeated, winning nine
games on its way to the 8-Man State Championship. Determination and
Dominance” is how the team was described. Led by Coach Gene McDonald, the
Outlaws averaged 55 points per game and allowed only 6.3 points per game, as the
Outlaws outscored their opponents by an astounding 495 – 57. The team began the
season by overwhelming Prospect 49 0, then continued to roll over teams
throughout the season, including wins over Cascade Locks (77 – 0), Culver (80 – 25),
and Dufur (66-0). Sisters beat Eddyville in the semi-finals 27 – 7, then completed its
undefeated season with a 19 – 0 win over the defending state champions, Ione, in the
“snow bowl” at Sisters. Members of the team included Bob Hewitt, Joel Aylor,
Dennis Barclay, Blaine Erickson, Rick Tewalt, Pat Hammack, Jim Myers, Ken
Morton, Joe Abbott, Steve Shehan, Tom Smith, Bud Brockett, Ron Langeliers, Dean
Phillips, A.J. Demaris, Ralph Shaw, and Gerry Tewalt. Both A.J. Demaris and Gary
Tewalt scored over 100 points, and Demaris was named team MVP. By capturing
the 1961 Oregon 8-Man Crown, Sisters High School won its third state title in six
years, following in the footsteps of the 1957 and 1959 state champions.
